Green But Slightly Mean

Passionate about conservation, the Prince has written a number of books on the subject. He was the first President of the World Wildlife Fund in the UK from its beginnings in 1961 until 1982, President of WWF International from 1981 until 1996 and is now President Emeritus of the organization, now known as the World Wide Fund for Nature. Nevertheless, he would never describe himself as ‘green’ and in his own words is certainly ‘no bunny hugger’. In Fiona Bruce’s BBC interview to mark his ninetieth birthday, Prince Philip expanded on his views. ‘If we’ve got this extraordinary diversity on this globe it seems awfully silly for us to destroy it. All these other creatures have an equal right to exist here, we have no more prior rights to the Earth than anybody else and if they’re here let’s give them a chance to survive.’ He went on to explain, ‘I think that there’s a difference between being concerned for the conservation of nature and being a bunny hugger – people who simply love animals.’

The Prince is also the founder of the ARC, the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, which supports the work of religions around the world in protecting the environment. He worked with the charity for over thirty years until he stepped down from official duties in 2017. His standpoint was clear: ‘If you believe in God … then you should feel a responsibility to care for his Creation.’

This does not mean that the Prince is not also a keen shot and a vocal advocate of blood and field sports.

Always outspoken in his views, he has ruffled more than a few feathers over the years.
